Its
time to do away with the superlatives that have plagued the most forceful
personality that smashed the Indian screen ever. Just one simple word
would do to sum up the enti ty that Bachchan is CLASS. From
Calcutta to Bombay to the moon, Amitabh Bachchan has gatecrashed into
the heart, mind and soul of the nation with his speaking eyes, velvet
voice and midas touch. He begged and borrowed money to survive on
the mean streets of the film city in his formative years which gave
him forgettable roles like that of a mute Shera in Reshma
Aur Shera in which he lost not only his voice but also his screen
presence. The anger built up slowly and steadily, only to burst like
Mt. Vesuvius taking everyone down on their knees in ovation. With
Zanjeer he broke the shackles of oblivion and reigned as
the ultimate Don for 30 years. As Kaalia, he had
the temerity to sing with abandon hum maut ko jeene ka andaaz
sikha denge. The masses believed him. In and as Bemisaal,
he gave goose pimples to every sakhi who longed to be by
his side. And when in Laawaris he yanked the spoilt rich
girl Zeenat into running away by isse pehle ki mere andar
ka janvar uthe chalee jao yahan se, had every woman in the hall
rooted to her seat throbbing for more. And there was bountiful of
it in every real-life movie he cakewalked into. When name and fame
glossed over the anger in the real person, the Silsila of
the Kabhi Kabhi type of intense romance took over. That
was even better than the seething
fury. Rekha, Zeenat, Par veen, Rakhi all had a moment in time
as did the Indian public. Then came comedy, Amar Akbar Anthony,
Namak Halal and the non-stop commentary on the mans assets,
the same that Vijay Hazare and Vijay Merchant kicked offon the big
screen, much to the chagrin of zipper-down man Ranjit. The masses
too said: "Look Amitabh Bachchan..." And he looked, and
looked deep into the eyes of the crescendo of glory.
