Jyotsna Brar India Matters

Jyotsna Brar, Principal, Welham Girls High School, is heading an institute that touches the future through the hundreds of students that adorn the classrooms. Brar’s association with Welham is long. Due to the nature of her father's service, she studied in several schools, Chief among them being Welham Girls' School, Dehradun. A brilliant student in her student days, she was awarded the Maharaja Jeeyaji Rao Gold Medal for academics for getting the highest scores in her senior year. She graduated in 1972 from The Government College for Women, Chandigarh with English, Geography and Economics as her subjects. She was awarded several prizes for Academics, Dramatics and Public Speaking at the University and Inter-College level. She did her Post-graduation in English from Punjab University, Chandigarh in 1974 with an elective paper in Linguistics. At the University, she was involved in several co- curricular activities that included debating, dramatics, music and dance. She did her B.ED from the Annamalai University with English and Social Studies as her subjects, and secured a First Division in both Theory and Practicals. She began her teaching career at the Apeejay School, Faridabad, in 1985. She taught there for two years. From January 1987 to March 1992 she taught at Welham Girls High School, Dehradun. At WGHS she was a resident teacher and House Mistress of one of the Houses. She was also the Teacher-in-Charge of the English Literary Society and staff-editor of the monthly magazine "CHRYSALIS" of the literary society, which she founded. I the school, she organized and supervised several Intra-mural and Inter-school Debates, Plays, Declamation and Elocution contests and Greater Education Programmes that would aid in the personality development of the students. She was one of the teachers involved with the School's ecology and environment programme which involved working with the Nehru Yuva Kendra and the Friends of the Doon Society to organize tree- planting drives for the reforestation of the quarrying- affected Doon and Mussoorie hills. Since end-April 2000 Brar has been serving as Principal WGHS. It is a post that has helped her to mould the lives of more students than she could as a teacher. As one of her initiatives she is trying to have class 10-board examination treated as the college pre-application eligibility test. This way, once their results are through, students can apply to colleges of their choice, enclosing their marks and their resumes. Colleges will then finally offer admissions based on the class 12-exam results, the resumes and essays of intent. This, according Brar will be a better alternative than the proposed central college admission test which will probably mean the end of school boards. She also proposed the idea that schools return to holding board exams in December which will allow children the luxury of a gap year and time to prepare for life after school. With student-friendly perspective, it hardly comes as a surprise that she is students favorite. Besides teaching, Brar has a variety of interests. She has been a subscribing member of the WWF(I) and has an avid interest in the observation of flora and fauna and local ecosystems. She is greatly interested in Art and Handicraft. She studied Art as an elective subject upto High School and still enjoys learning craft. She was able to encourage students to learn basket- weaving, fabric- printing, papier mache etc. from local artisans at Jodhpur. She enjoys creative activities and actively pursues them. She is proud of her cultural heritage and has a regard for people from all walks of life. And she has inculcated the same sound principles and pride into the students in her school.
