Arun Jaitley India Matters
Arun Jaitley

If politics could be a matter of charm and intellect, there are few who could match the magic and charisma of Arun Jaitley, the eminent spin doctor of Bharatiya Janata Party. Articulate, sharp, suave and stylish, Arun Jaitley has helped the BJP reach new heights of electoral victories in recent times. A prominent student leader of yore, Jaitley has shouldered BJP's organisational responsibilities with panache and verve, which few have been able to display. As a General Secretary of the party, Jaitley recently played a key role in Assembly elections in five states during 2006. He was also deputed to supervise the West Bengal elections. In Gujarat, Jaitley helped Narendra Modi win the Assembly Elections with a landslide mandate. But these are only few of his achievements helping the party to grow rapidly. A designated Senior Advocate and former Additional Solicitor General of India, Jaitley has been practicing law before the Supreme Court and several High Courts since 1977. One of India's legal luminaries, Jaitley has also been part of Indian delegate to the UN General Assembly on Law relating to Drugs and Money Laundering. The 54-year-old Jaitley who had his schooling from St. Xavier School and Shri Ram College of Commerce and a Law degree from Delhi University has been one of the front runners in the BJP. He has been appointed to several important posts including as spokesman of the Bharatiya Janata Party, as the Minister of State with independent charge of Department of Disinvestment. Subsequently, he took over as Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting (independent charge) in 1999 along with additional charge of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs. Soon he was elevated as a Cabinet Minister with the charge of Law, Justice and Company Affairs and the additional charge of the Ministry of Shipping. Later, Jaitley joined the Union Cabinet as the Minister of Commerce and Industry and Law and Justice. Jaitley also played a critical role in the anti-Emergency movement (1975-77) and was put under preventive detention for more than a year. He was also instrumental in launching an agitation against corruption in 1973. Although Jaitley has never enjoyed the electoral popularity as other BJP leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee or LK Advani have, nevertheless, his credentials hold enough hope of his popularity and a possibility of occupying not less than 7, Race Cource residence in future.
